TIFFANY STUDIOS, AMERICAN INDIAN, LETTER RACK, 3 TIER 2 COMPARTMENT, AGED DORE'

Description

For auction is a bronze desk set item made by Tiffany Studios, New York. This is called a letter rack holder and it is done in Tiffany's Studios most sought after aged acid etched dore' patina. This letter rack is part of the highly collected bronze "American Indian" desk set pattern. The letter rack has some size to it as it 11" wide, stands 5 3/4" tall, and is 2 3/4" deep.
This letter rack displays wonderful geometric patterns and symbols to honor "The American Indian" throughout, including the back top. This letter rack has the very desirable "Acid Etched" with large snowflakes and a naturally aged bronze dore' (Gold) patina. This is a real collectors choice in the Arts & Crafts style decor. This is one of the most sought after and most popular patinas in the Tiffany Desk set patterns. It has 2 separate compartments to hold letters of various sizes and 3 metal tiers. It still retains all 9 of its original mounting screws that hold the bottom and top together. This letter rack is quite heavy and will be difficult to knock over as it is solid bronze.
The letter rack is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no dents, or dings. This piece shows very minimal wear on the inside bottom. There is some polish residue and oxidation in some of the grooves. The wear on the inside cannot be seen unless you are looking directly into the compartments. The piece is signed on the bottom with "Tiffany Studios New York" impressed mark along with the pattern number 1186 for the 3 tier 2 compartment letter rack shape. There are also the numbers "8772" with a few lines scratched through it like it was an error below and left of the incised signature in the center of a large snowflake. This is more than likely the order number and I believe that to be number 8772.
Tiffany started using a 3 digit number for his fancy desk set goods after 1902 subsequently this piece was made circa 1905-1920. This is a quality and hard to find item in the Tiffany desk set items. The quality doesn't get much better than this. I'm sure the buyer will be delighted with their purchase.
